Primitive Skills
Project | Primitive Skills
At the school I was at previously, Ashwood, we all needed to complete an 8th grade project, for mine I decided to study Primitive Skills, you could also call them Wilderness Survival, or Off-Grid living skills... whatever makes the most sense to you. As part of my project I created a shelter made out of sticks and leaves, called a Debris Shelter, I also learned how to make fire using a type of primitive friction fire. Practicing tracking, and plant identification were also part of my project. I had a lot of fun and it feels like it taught me how to be more grounded and confident in other areas of my life as well.
Herbology
Project | Farm Hand on an Herb Farm
Over the summer between my 8th grade and freshman year I got a job working for an herb farm for a wonderful woman who taught me much about herb identification and medicinal uses. I learned a lot from experience and working with the plant rather than book learning. She also recommended that I read Braiding Sweetgrass a book that blend indigenous folk knowledge and scientific research. All-in-all it was a summer very well spent, and I look forward to deepening my knowledge of this subject in the years to come.
